Beginner’s Italian

About the course:

The course is designed for students interested in the Italian language and culture. This is an opportunity to study the language of arts, music, design, architecture, opera, and food and to get sociocultural knowledge about the country that hosts over 60 percent of the world's cultural heritage sites.

The classes are conducted in an interactive manner, allowing the students to communicate in Italian as much as possible. This method makes the learning process both challenging and fun. The emphasis is on communication; thus, students speak Italian from the first day. They are engaged in interactive language activities, participating in group and pair work. The course also focuses on creative and critical thinking. At the end of each lesson, there is a "one-minute paper" activity to prompt students to reflect on the day's lesson and give feedback.

Learning objectives:

At the end of the course, students will acquire basic language skills (reading, writing, listening, speaking) and achieve the equivalent of A1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), more specifically

  • comprehend and respond with grammatical accuracy to simple oral and written communication,
  • acquire basic vocabulary,
  • make short presentations,
  • participate in open discussions,
  • acquire sociocultural knowledge (e.g., Italian cuisine, culture, and lifestyle)
